If visiting Holehird has made you feel good, we would value your vote
As we all emerge from the restrictions of the last two years, it’s never been more important to get out into nature, and enjoy the sounds, scents and sights of the nation’s gardens and the RHS is once again asking visitors to vote for their favourite among its 207 Partner gardens in the 2022 RHS Partner Garden of The Year competition.
The theme of the competition is ‘Feel Good’, reflecting how beneficial exercise and a connection to nature are for good mental health and wellbeing. If your visits to our garden (or just seeing the pictures and videos that we have been sharing) have made you feel good, we would love you to vote for us. Please know that there is no obligation for you to vote for us. However, if you would like to vote for us, please click on this Link which takes you to the voting page.
To vote for Holehird, please select the ‘North of England and Northern Ireland’ category and fill in the corresponding details. All voters will be entered into a prize draw to win a pair of tickets to the RHS Hampton Court Palace Festival and the competition runs through to 30 September 2022.
By supporting us in this way, your vote will help raise our profile and also says a big ‘thank you’ to the many volunteers who work at Holehird. Your vote will also help Holehird in many other ways too numerous to list!
Thank you so much.
Don't be misled by the estate agent's sign at the gate! This refers only to the mansion house and does not affect Holehird Gardens. The LHS continues to welcome visitors to the gardens all year round. During the ongoing Covid situation, we simply ask visitors to observe sensible hygiene and social distancing precautions as the safety and health of our volunteers and visitors remain a priority. As usual during the winter months, Visitor Reception is closed so there are no facilities for buying hot drinks or publications but visitors are always welcome in the garden
We hope you enjoy your visit to Holehird Gardens. We ask all visitors to make a donation of £5 to help with the upkeep of the garden. This may be deposited in the collection boxes situated in the car park (close to the sign board) and outside Visitor Reception, where you will also find maps and useful information about the LHS and Holehird Gardens.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the LHS, our volunteer gardeners were asked to select their favourite plants amongst all those to be found at Holehird. Their 50 favourites are shown in this book. The book is illustrated with photographs taken at Holehird by our volunteers and the description of each plant includes growing information. Gold labels mark the “Gardeners’ Choice” in the garden. Many of the plants have also been grown for sale at Holehird - look out for same gold label on the pots in the plant sales area.
Price: £5.50.
The Lakeland Horticultural Society was honoured with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. This public recognition of the work done by the volunteers of the LHS came as we celebrated our 50th anniversary, and is a tribute to all those who have played a part during those 50 years.
The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Winners are announced each year on 2 June, the anniversary of the Queen's coronation.
The Award was presented to the LHS by Claire Hensman, Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria.
