Marchesi Centre, Holly Road, off Ellerthwaite Road, Windermere, LA23 2AF

Heather Birkett is Garden and Outdoor Manager at Acorn Bank, the National Trust property in Temple Sowerby, near Penrith.  Best known for its comprehensive herb collection and traditional fruit orchards, Acorn Bank is a tranquil haven with a fascinating historical and industrial past.  Today the walled gardens shelter a medicinal herb garden, herbaceous borders, lily-filled pond and traditional orchards carpeted with Edwardian daffodils in spring.  But in the past Acorn Bank has been the base of the Knights Templar, as well as an important centre for gypsum mining.
