In light of the latest government requirement that everybody must stay at home, avoiding all unnecessary travel, it is with great regret that the LHS once again asks people not to visit Holehird for the time being. Our aim in making this request is to enable everyone to stay safe, to keep others safe and to encourage compliance with new laws aimed at reducing transmission of the virus as far as possible. This policy will, of course, be reviewed as government advice changes and we very much hope we will be able to welcome visitors back to Holehird before too long, but only when it is safe to do so.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the LHS, our volunteer gardeners were asked to select their favourite plants amongst all those to be found at Holehird. Their 50 favourites are shown in this book. The book is illustrated with photographs taken at Holehird by our volunteers and the description of each plant includes growing information. Gold labels mark the “Gardeners’ Choice” in the garden. Many of the plants have also been grown for sale at Holehird - look out for same gold label on the pots in the plant sales area.
Price: £5.50.
The LHS has been honoured with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. This public recognition of the work done by the volunteers of the LHS comes as we celebrate our 50th anniversary, and is a tribute to all those who have played a part during those 50 years.
The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Winners are announced each year on 2 June, the anniversary of the Queen's coronation.
The Award will be presented to the LHS by Claire Hensman, Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, later this summer.
